VeloMetrics: Open-Source Bike Computer

Built by Eric Huang

VeloMetrics is a fully custom, open-source bike computer built on the ESP 32-S3 that bridges the gap between expensive proprietary devices and cheap alternatives by offering real-time data including speed, elevation gain, and trip distance through glove-friendly physical buttons. The device will run a custom capacitive touch display and ingests data from a GPS module. What distinguishes VeloMetrics is its integration with the cycling ecosystem most riders depend on, including Strava for live segment alerts and basic map pathfinding, meaning cyclists maintain their existing workflows without sacrificing a dedicated, purpose-built device. The compact 3D-printed PETG enclosure features a bike computer compatible mount and a flat LiPo battery. Most importantly, VeloMetrics is fully open-source, allowing cyclists to understand, modify, and improve their own technology rather than being locked into proprietary ecosystems.
